A clean mattress is essential for good sleep hygiene and health. This comprehensive guide will teach you how to deep clean your mattress in the UK, removing stains, odours, and allergens for a fresh, hygienic sleeping surface.

Why Clean Your Mattress?

Over time, mattresses accumulate sweat, dead skin cells, dust mites, and allergens. Regular cleaning helps maintain a healthy sleep environment and extends your mattress's lifespan.

Step 1: Strip the Bed

Remove all bedding, including sheets, pillowcases, and mattress protectors. Wash these in hot water (60°C+) to kill dust mites and bacteria.

Step 2: Vacuum the Mattress

Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment. Vacuum the entire surface, paying special attention to seams and edges where dust mites accumulate. Flip the mattress and vacuum the other side.

Step 3: Treat Stains

For fresh stains, blot immediately with a clean cloth. For set-in stains, create a paste of baking soda and water. Apply to the stain, let dry, then vacuum. For urine stains, use a mixture of white vinegar and water, then sprinkle baking soda to neutralise odours.

Step 4: Deodorise

Sprinkle baking soda liberally over the entire mattress surface. Let it sit for several hours (ideally 8-12 hours) to absorb odours. For extra freshness, add a few drops of essential oil to the baking soda.

Step 5: Vacuum Again

Thoroughly vacuum the baking soda from the mattress. Use the upholstery attachment and go over the surface multiple times to ensure all baking soda is removed.

Step 6: Air Out

If possible, place the mattress near an open window or outside (protected from direct sunlight) to air out. Fresh air helps eliminate any remaining odours.

Step 7: Protect Your Mattress

Once clean, use a mattress protector to prevent future stains and extend cleaning intervals. Choose a breathable, waterproof protector for best results.

How Often Should You Clean Your Mattress?

  • Vacuum: Every 2-3 months
  • Deep clean: Every 6 months
  • After spills or accidents: Immediately
  • When moving: Always deep clean

When to Hire a Professional

For severe stains, persistent odours, or if you have allergies, professional mattress cleaning may be necessary. Professional cleaners use steam cleaning and specialised equipment that can deep clean and sanitise your mattress more effectively than DIY methods.
