Carpet stains are inevitable, but knowing how to remove them quickly and effectively can save your carpets and your deposit. This guide covers the most common carpet stains in UK homes and the best methods to remove them.

General Stain Removal Principles

  • Act quickly - the faster you treat a stain, the easier it is to remove
  • Blot, don't rub - rubbing can spread the stain and damage carpet fibres
  • Work from outside in - prevents the stain from spreading
  • Test cleaning solutions on a hidden area first

Wine Stains

Immediately blot with a clean cloth. Mix one part white vinegar with two parts water, apply to the stain, and blot. Follow with cold water and blot dry. For red wine, sprinkle salt first to absorb the liquid.

Pet Stains

Blot up as much as possible. Mix one tablespoon of washing-up liquid with two cups of warm water. Apply, let sit for 5 minutes, then blot. For odours, use a mixture of white vinegar and water (equal parts).

Coffee Stains

Blot immediately. Mix one tablespoon of washing-up liquid, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water. Apply, blot, rinse with cold water, and blot dry.

Blood Stains

Use cold water only (hot water sets blood stains). Blot with cold water until the stain is gone. For stubborn stains, apply a paste of cornflour and cold water, let dry, then vacuum.

Ink Stains

Apply rubbing alcohol or hairspray to a cloth and dab the stain. Don't rub. Continue dabbing until the ink transfers to the cloth. Rinse with cold water and blot dry.

Grease and Oil Stains

Sprinkle cornflour or talcum powder on the stain and let sit for 15 minutes to absorb the grease. Vacuum, then apply washing-up liquid mixed with warm water. Blot and rinse.
